Digs Posted August 9, 2023 Report Posted August 9, 2023 I`ve just inherited an older car. I don`t have any use for it or a full time place to store it but it was their pride and joy and well looked after and in great condition for it`s age so I`d like to see it go to someone who would appreciate it and take care of it, rather than it rust on the street outside my house or go to someone who will wreck it (obviously I won`t ever know for sure). It`s an H plate 1992 Mazda 626 2.0L GLX Exec, the bodywork is immaculate, it`s done 72k since new, and I`m only the third owner. It`s spent most of it`s life garaged, and only did about 2k miles per year. The question I have is how do I go about selling this to the right person? I`ve tried to search for Mazda owners groups, but drawn a blank other than people speaking about newer/current models. It`s not really a `classic` as such, and being 31 years old, there are very. very few up for sale that I can find that gives an indication of where is the best place to sell it or what it`s worth as value seems to vary wildly. I`ve tried online car buyers to get a valuation but they don`t even recognise the reg. I might have someone to who might be interested but it`s a long shot until I actually get to speak to them, but has anyone got any advice they can give in routes to take? Quote
Superally Posted August 9, 2023 Report Posted August 9, 2023 At that age I would suggest Car and Classic or E-bay classic cars. The other suggestion is Morris Leslie Classic car auctions in Errol. It has an auction on 11th Sept. If it's in good condition, runs and comes with a current MOT it helps. At that age its difficult to value 2 Quote
Piracy Posted August 9, 2023 Report Posted August 9, 2023 I watch Bangers & Cash on the TV. Mathewsons, the firm that owns the vehicle auction firm sell all sorts for clients. Sommebody like them can advise on value, reserve price etc. Although they're in Yorkshire, they'll take cars from anywhere in the UK. Bound to be similar companies nearer. 1 Quote
Digs Posted August 9, 2023 Author Report Posted August 9, 2023 Mathewsons is a good shout, they've actually sold one. A lot of the classic car sites seem hit and miss. I've only come across three others for sale in the UK of varying ages, mostly younger and only one older than mine, they seem quite rare. I guess the issue is who would want it? I've got a bit of time as it's taxed and insured and it's MOT'd until next month and the guy who used to do the work on it has said a couple of times when my dad took it in that he would be interested if it was ever sold, so hopefully he is still there when I take it in. I want to make sure it's not sold for sweeties though, not for me, just for the fact that the person I got it from loved the car so I don't want to just punt it for whatever I can get, it's not about the selling of it, I can afford to be patient to make sure it goes to the right person, I'm not interested in just punting it to get rid of it. 1 Quote
Superally Posted August 9, 2023 Report Posted August 9, 2023 If the MOT has only a month it would be worthwhile putting it through again as will add value. I own a classic car (Austin Healey) and do keep a watching brief. Mathewsons in Yorkshire is a good shout. But Morris Leslie do the same and give advice but are local - based in Errol between Perth and Dundee. I have attended their auctions on several occasion and it always draws a good crowd, if necessary you can also agree a reserve. Ultimately sentiment apart any car is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it and usually its never enough. A Mazda enthusiast would be ideal though and perhaps through a owners club there may be some additional options. Quote
buspasspar Posted August 9, 2023 Report Posted August 9, 2023 Out of interest at what age does a car become tax and mot exempt ? I had a Mazda 626 back in the late 80's .. really good car Quote
Superally Posted August 9, 2023 Report Posted August 9, 2023 25yrs, so Digs Mazda is officially exempt but it must be roadworthy. However a load of classic car owners do put their car through a MOT Quote
