Vinnie
Reading yesterday that there are calls to classify obesity as a disease. Today, there is talk of adding "tobacco style health warnings" to food labels and packaging. Granted, obesity is an issue, but is it really a disease? the saline hill puma
No its not a disease in most cases, its a lifestyle choice for the majority which causes it
scottyboy
If you have an under active thyroid, then it can be linked with obesity. Most cases regarding obesity are caused by poor diet and lack of exercise. Could even be classed as comfort eating if you have low self esteem. Andycarp
In most cases if not all Obesity is self-inflicted and should not be classed as a disease. I am doing my bit by cutting down the amount of Coke that I put in my Rum.

Vinnie
So if its a choice rather than a disease, would tobacco style health warnings (these minging images of cancers and the screwed up lungs) make a difference? I doubt it... kids are fat because of what they eat, but thats compounded by inactivity. Kids sitting on iPads and XBoxs or Playstations, or mobile phones, is as much as a contributor as what they eat. Sweeties will continue to be wrapped in bright attractive packages, kids will still want them. The other thing for me, is that its cheaper to buy frozen pizzas and chicken nuggets and chips, than it is to buy fresh foods. These days, both parents work, so frozen meals are easy options. Parents are making lazy choices and kids make lazy choices. There needs to be a change in attitudes towards lifestyle, not just foods.
