Minimum Pricing On Alcohol

Vinnie

Recommended Posts

After five years of legal wrangling, Scotland will now have a new minimum price per unit on alcohol.

I understand the principal, but are there better ways to tackle Scotland's drinking problems?

In Europe you have specialist Tobacco Shops, could you ban supermarkets and convenience stores selling alcohol, and implement special Off Licences?  Could you ban advertising of alcohol, or drinks deals on TV, or in print?

Not sure what will help. I don't really think this will, as I don't think it will have that much affect on most drinkers who have an issue. They'll just switch up what they're drinking, and minimum pricing will mean they'll only need to switch to something that will be a little more expensive. Some have suggested folk who have an alcohol issue and who drink the really cheap nasty ****e will just continue to do so anyway, and sacrifice other financial commitments to continue to fund it.

It might, and I stress might, future generations from getting hooked on drinking, but I have my doubts. Seems to me that all this will do is eliminate the cheap nasty stuff for the most part.

Addicts on the whole are quite selfish, so I totally agree.

Every week I get a flyer with my Royal Mail for Asda, or Morrisons, or Tesco, or Iceland.  And every week I see a drinks promotion, whether its £15 for a litre of spirits, or 2 for £10 on selected wines, or whatever.  A litre of Vodka will be something like £14 on this minimum pricing scheme, so the retailer still profits.

Id ban drinks promos on these flyers.  Id ban drinks advertising on TV, and Id ban drinks advertising in the press.  If I'm directed to the drinks aisle, I'm more inclined to buy, and probably not just whats on offer. If I stock up on drinks, if I have them in the house, I'm more likely to drink them.  If I don't know what drinks are on offer, I'm less likely to head down that aisle.

your point about advertising doesn't really help those with issues currently as they don't care about advertising they will go any buy drink regardless of a flyer through the door or a advert on TV. Although it MAY stop issues in future, although I doubt it will as people will still drink regardless of obstacles put in the way.
