I long for the days when I could nip down to John Menzies and get a fresh copy of "Sounds" or "Melody Maker" or (God forbid), the "New Musical Express" and leafing merrily through it's finger-blackening pages to further increase my vast knowledge of utterly useless music trivia... Being a forward thinking type of person I also invested my meagre earnings in a subscription to the new fangled ("Kerrang!") magazine, a truly groudbreaking publication, conveniently aimed at patchouli-sodden, long haired, denim clad, Marillion loving pathetic individuals like myself... Since the unfortunate demise of "Sounds", I took "Melody Maker" for a while, but now there seems to be no more specialist newspapers anymore, which is a shame... I understand that "times have moved oan ya slavering hoor etc", but I'm not really finding anything online that's that interesting either... Youse? The only thing one that I do follow is a fella called Noisey on YouTube. He interviews all manner of musicians. Some of his videos have been pretty good. Digs Posted December 12, 2019 Report Share Posted December 12, 2019 Not read a music magazine other than the odd Q since I stopped reading Smash Hits in 2nd year. I think it's indicative of the demise of printed media in general. Younger generations just don't read printed media anymore, there's no demand. It did thankfully dampen the delusions of self importance of publications like NME though, who held far too high an opinion of their own views, which was delicious. I don't think it is at all, live music is really big just now and you just need to look at the bands youngsters are listening to at the moment, Blossoms, Sam Fender, Catfish, The Snuts, Liam Gallagher(!), Gerry Cinnamon, all non-pop acts. Also, the Outwith Festival round the town in September was absolutely bouncing. I can't remember last time I saw the town so lively. It all depends on what stations you listen to nowadays due to DAB radio, most stations now are genre based. The days of Radio 1 playing the latest music no matter what type of band they are is long gone. Guitar and Indie based live music is thriving. Pop has it's place but it's defintiely not dominant. Mainstream radio is still pop-centric. I rarely listen to the radio, if its on in the car its for travel reports and that tends to require a local station - I dont have DAB in the motor. I stream most tunes via Spotify. Predominently playlists that others have created. Cant remember the last time I bought an album. Things arent as they were five years ago. The world is a mad place. To find out about gigs, releases, new bands etc the written word was indispensable. You had to consider carefully what to buy. Now, even on your phone algorithms can punt bands that you have never heard before to you. Spotify is pretty good at that I find. Not so much new bands, as bands that I hav never heard before. The Internet in general has made it easier to dig out new music. DAB radio also and being able to listen to shows on repeat and the massive variety of shows available is incredible.
