Is the squad weaker this season?

Thats us 3 league games and the group stage of the league cup down we look well short. Looking at the bench yesterday the only "senior" player is Hamilton who is effectively a defensive midfielder.

So far we have let go McDonald, O Hara, Todorov, Mochrie and Mahon to be replaced by Summers on a loan deal and O Halloran.

Being pomoted and not improving the pool while other teams seem to have done is bizarre. I have been hesitant to be critial in the hope we were just waiting for the right players but I cant see 3/4 signings coming in this week.

I think we have better quality this season just not the quantity. The main loss to me was Todorov and he really should have been kept. We have lacked a proven goal scorer to get 25 to 30 goals a season but that was the case when we had all the above players. Our chances to conversion ratio has been very poor for several seasons now with different players and managers. I have no idea why and if I did I would be a fair bit richer. Yesterday was a blow mostly because we were the better team overall but just did not convert any of our good chances. I am not convinced that bulking the pool is the answer either unless there is a couple of 30 goal a season striker looking for a job at reasonable rates.

All the players named are better than our bench yesterday from what I have seen

5 Chris Hamilton
16 Ben Summers
18 Paul Allan
19 Miller Fenton
26 Taylor Sutherland
28 Andrew Tod
44 Max Little (GK)

The only change to the starting 11 is the goalkeeper(due to injury) and O'halloren.

We 100% have worse quality along with quantity in the squad. Hopefully the guys on the bench prove me wrong.

Fair comment but I was really talking about the whole squad and the first team not just the bench. The bench is short and that is agreed. As an aside , who would you buy to strengthen the squad and how would you do it?

I dont think its fair to ask a punter to name players without being the manager/scout/boardmember who is much closer to the detail of scouting/budget and availablity of players and who's job it is to put together the best squad possible. However looking at our rivals in the league(and assuming we have bigger budgets than most of them due to income/crowds). I would have taken from rovers alone murray(better than all our CBs) ,byrne(better than chalmers and Etto),hamilton(a better option for an additional forward) and smith(a good impact player from the bench rather than what we already have).

I would have also kept Todorov, McGowan and it seem  Witherspoon is choosing to be unemployed than take the deal being offered. Thats 3 weeks wages he has chosen not to take on the basis he isnt happy with the offer by the sounds of it.

100% it’s weaker. And folk seem to just be accepting it. Injuries are part and parcel of football and we just got extremely lucky last season with the lack of them

What do you mean "accepting it"?

What should we be doing? Dirty protests? Hunger strikes? All night vigils? I'm intrigued

I don't think anyone we have signed is a mistake. Fisher,KRH, Otoo etc. I'm fairly comfortable with what McPake & McKay are doing regarding the team they're building. That said, I think it's natural for fans to want additions made to a squad. I agree that over a season we'll pick up suspensions and injuries that will negatively affect team selection. McPake said they're trying to get players in, so they recognise we need players. This league is a step up in quality compared to last season, so for me it's maybe not that the squad is weaker, just that the opposition is stronger.

Remembered this post while thinking about the squad on the drive home.

We are really struggling and i'm not confident we will have recruits in January

Not replacing Todorov with a similar type player hasn't been a great move IMO. His positioning may have resulted with more successful crosses from O'Halloran.

Not sure O'Hara and McDonald have been losses, other than the injuries I can't see when any of them would have played.

Summers looks a player but like Mochrie he's not a battler and I think Moffats playing in the wrong position to get the best out of him. Happy enough with Fisher and Otto. KRH obviously hasn't had any chance to shine yet.

Like you I'm not sure what we can bring in but I'm hoping to god we do.

I think if everyone was fit, you could make a case for the squad being MARGINALLY stronger than last season.   I agreed with those that we let go at the time when the club were talking about quality replacements, I’m still waiting in that regard.

It would be churlish for anyone to say that had the following three players been kept on there would be no difference at all.  There have been games where Macdonalds different approach at wing back could have made a difference, games crying out for a change of attacking style up top whether it be Todorov or OHara.  With us being so threadbare with injuries each one of those absolutely could have contributed at some point over the last few months.   I still maintain that it was right that they went, but we have risked it again this season being so tight on numbers.  Last year we got away with it big time, this year - caught out.

Club needs to make additions in January, and work out what is going wrong to cause so many injuries.  Medical care?  Rehab?  Overload?  Whatever it is, needs fixed fast because this is now beyond a joke.

We were promised that the club would sign quality in the previous window, that when fans saw the calibre of player we would be targeting, we’d understand the patience.

My patience is running thin now.  Has been for some time already this season and I’m getting serious deja vu about certain aspects of our club activity.  I get the impression from many forums that lots of fans are behaving like “doing well to be 4th/5th” with our 6 wins so far this season and a hideous record against 3 teams above us.   No we’re not.  Sorry but a lot of this season has been bloody awful to watch.  I want positivity about our club, but let’s have some reality checks in place, other than an occasional fisting of Morton, Airdrie and Queens Park, it’s been pretty turgid.

Injuries have had a big effect on the club, but whether it’s the manager or the board, someone is culpable for running at such a tight squad that we have no depth to change games, something that McPake was brilliant at last season.

I get more concerned when I hear unverified reports of near to seven figure losses for last season, despite what has to be the most commercialised operation at the club for years, and we certainly aren’t blowing money on loads of players.   We are the second highest supported club in the division, I just think we are right to expect a bit more.
